Textile Project

The  project  aims  to  capture  the  best design and

weaving practices of Naga women, enhance the skill

of  women  in best  practices  of  weaving, stimulate

the  production  of  local  fiber  and  yarns as well as

provide  support  and  assistance to the community

of weavers.

 

By  researching  and   documenting   and  capturing

traditional  Naga  motifs,  styles  and  designs;  the

project  works  to  conserve  millennia old spinning,

weaving   and   dyeing   methods  integral  to  Naga

cultural  history  and  identity, and at the same time

new techniques/technology is being employed to produce Naga themed modern apparel.

 

Latest digital printing technology have been introduced and with the induction of highly qualified fashion designers, graphic designers, weavers etc Naga themed modern apparel have been designed and developed from locally produced fabrics.

 

Understanding with the Sericulture Department for spinning of Eri Silk

As an outcome of the meeting with the Sericulture Department to assess the strength of each Department and synergize their activities into a more meaningful output, the following activities, to be taken up jointly, were worked out:

 

  • The Department of Sericulture would Facilitate availability of Eri cocoons  for  the  Department  of  Women  Development  for  its  Textile   Project.

 

  • The Department of Women Development would procure these cocoons and utilize the wide network of women SHG  members to undertake spinning activities in six common  facilities  centers’,  which  are  under development,  in  Peren,  Kohima, Mokokchung, Mon, Phek and Wokha districts. Training and other logistic support would be provided by the Sericulture Department.

 

  • Based  on  assessed  production  levels,  a  100 Kg  per  day capacity mini cocoon carding and  roving centre  will  be  set  up  in the Textile Resource Centre. These processed raw materials will be distributed to the CSCs where the actual spinning will occur.
